How to finish your book
There is a saying that I like to tell aspiring authors:
“I’m writing a book right now. I’ve already got the page numbers ready.”

Usually everyone laughs because they know exactly what that means:
Everyone starts writing a book.
Very few finish.
There are more books being read than there are inhabitants in Germany.
Why?
Why do so few people manage to finish their book?
The most common reason:
There is a lack of routine.
Too many beginning authors believe that writing a book is a Herculean task.
The book is a giant dragon that must be defeated with one blow.
Incorrect.
A book is more like a swarm of little fruit flies.
You have to kill them one by one.
Day after day.
A fly every day.
Means for you:
Write a little every day.
And not “50,000 words in a month”.
This is total nonsense.
Because you are working against your brain.
Our brains tend to avoid big, difficult, and scary tasks – like writing 2,000 words a day.
Your brain will do everything it can to avoid this unpleasant activity – cleaning, tidying up, cooking.
Anything but writing.

That’s why I invented the M&M tactic.
It works like this:
Imagine you have a bag of M&M’s in front of you.
You think to yourself: “I’ll only eat one chocolate drop.”
But will it stay that way?
No.
We usually keep snacking until the bag is empty.
This is exactly how you should write your book.
Think about it:
“I’ll just write one paragraph.”
This is seductively easy for your brain. There will be no resistance to it.
But what happens?
You keep the format is the product’s logo writing and writing.
And so you don’t just get to a paragraph, but a page or more.

You have a sense of achievement.
Dopamine is released because you have achieved even MORE than you set out to do.
The result?
You repeat this activity because your brain is always seeking dopamine.
